I thought the U.S. had no choice but to fight the war of 1812. The British, short on manpower, were impressing Americans into their navy. Just stopping American ships on the ocean and forcing them off at gunpoint. Once impressed into the navy the sailors were forced to serve for a lifetime too btw. I don't think any nation could survive the wholesale enslavement of it's population, and hope to hold it's own on the world stage. The militia sent to fight the British, weren't fighting to conquer any territory, they were fighting for the freedom of their countrymen, and they got it. The British parliament voted to end impressment, and the American sailors, a few thousand if i recall, were set free. I could beleive there was a difference between what the average joe in the militia was fighting for, and what the politicians had in mind. If you told me that Washington was in it for conquest then I would probably beleive you. No I haven't watched the documentary yet, I will when I have time.

There's a legal argument for you. If someone deserts from the British Navy, goes to live in the US and is naturalised as a US citizen, can the British still drag him back to serve his sentence for desertion?

The war with Napoleon was over in 1814, well then I guess they moved up Waterloo a year or so. Strange that Waterloo actually took place in June and the peace treaty with the US was signed in December 1814, though news didn't reach North America till February.
