Now reporting 16 dead The usual. Someone with mental illness and an assault weapon. Suspect still at large.

At least 16 dead in Maine mass killing and police hunt for the shooter as residents take shelter

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — A man shot and killed at least 16 people at a restaurant and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday and then fled into the night, sparking a massive search by hundreds of officers while frightened residents stayed locked in their homes.

A police bulletin identified Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest in the attack that sent panicked bowlers scrambling behind pins when shots rang out around 7 p.m. Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve and assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine.

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service.

Lewiston Police said in an earlier Facebook post that they were dealing with an active shooter incident at Schemengees Bar and Grille and at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) away.

One bowler, who identified himself only as Brandon, said he heard about 10 shots, thinking the first was a balloon popping.

“I had my back turned to the door. And as soon as I turned and saw it was not a balloon — he was holding a weapon — I just booked it,” he told The Associated Press.

Brandon said he scrambled down the length of the alley, sliding into the pin area and climbing up to hide in the machinery. He was among a busload of survivors who were driven to a middle school in the neighboring city of Auburn to be reunited with family and friends.

“I was putting on my bowling shoes when when it started. I’ve been barefoot for five hours,” he said.

Melinda Small, the owner of Legends Sports Bar and Grill, said her staff immediately locked their doors and moved all 25 customers and employees away from the doors after a customer reported hearing about the shooting at the bowling alley less than a quarter-mile away. Soon, the police flooded the roadway and a police officer eventually escorted everyone out of the building.

“I am honestly in a state of shock. I am blessed that my team responded quickly and everyone is safe,” Small said. “But at the same time, my heart is broken for this area and for what everyone is dealing with. I just feel numb.”

After the shooting, police, many armed with rifles, took up positions while the city descended into eerie quiet — punctuated by occasional sirens — as people hunkered down at home. Schools were closed Thursday in Lewiston, Lisbon and Auburn, as well as municipal offices in Lewiston.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office released two photos of the suspect on its Facebook page that showed the shooter walking into an establishment with a weapon raised to his shoulder.

Two law enforcement officials told The AP that at least 16 people were killed and the toll was expected to rise. However, Michael Sauschuck, commissioner of the Maine Department of Public Safety, declined to provide a specific estimate at a news conference, calling it a “fluid situation.” State police planned to hold a mid-morning news conference Thursday.

The two law enforcement officials said dozens of people also had been wounded. The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

On its website, Central Maine Medical Center said staff were “reacting to a mass casualty, mass shooter event” and were coordinating with area hospitals to take in patients. The hospital was locked down and police, some armed with rifles, stood by the entrances.

Meanwhile, hospitals as far away as Portland, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) to the south, were on alert to potentially receive victims.

An order for residents and business owners to stay inside and off the streets of the city of 37,000 was extended Wednesday night from Lewiston to Lisbon, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away, after a “vehicle of interest” was found there, authorities said.

Gov. Janet Mills released a statement echoing instructions for people to shelter. She said she had been briefed on the situation and will remain in close contact with public safety officials.

President Joe Biden spoke by phone to Mills and the state's Senate and House members, offering “full federal support in the wake of this horrific attack,” a White House statement said.

Maine Sen. Angus King, an independent, said he was “deeply sad for the city of Lewiston and all those worried about their family, friends and neighbors” and was monitoring the situation. King’s office said the senator would be headed directly home to Maine on the first flight possible.

Local schools will be closed Thursday and people should shelter in place or seek safety, Superintendent Jake Langlais said, adding: “Stay close to your loved ones. Embrace them."

Wednesday's death toll was staggering for a state that in 2022 had 29 homicides the entire year.

Maine doesn't require permits to carry guns, and the state has a longstanding culture of gun ownership that is tied to its traditions of hunting and sport shooting.

Some recent attempts by gun control advocates to tighten the state’s gun laws have failed. Proposals to require background checks for private gun sales and create a 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases failed earlier this year. Proposals that focused on school security and banning bump stocks failed in 2019.

State residents have also voted down some attempts to tighten gun laws in Maine. A proposal to require background checks for gun sales failed in a 2016 public vote.

So, a mentally unstable person with guns in the military, didn't have his guns temporarily held while he was in treatment? I thought that's what the right wants? Don't they claim that almost all the problem with guns is mental illness?

Again just contradictory nonsense and spectacular ignorance. Only Hawaii requires gun owners to "register" their guns. And only a few states require certain guns to be registered. The vast majority of the 390+ guns in the S are not registered.

18 people killed and 13 wounded. It was youth night at the bowling ally so it is believed many of people shot were teenagers or younger. Only a few of the dead have been identified and they need DNA to identify most the others because an AR 15 assault rifle blows their faces off if they are shot in the head.

Suspect still at large with multiple towns locked down.

I need to make a correction. The shooter is not "ex military." He is a firearms instructor in the Army reserves.

Lots of questions about how someone who was locked up for a few weeks in a mental hospital got his hands on an assault weapon and extended magazines. He was hearing voices in his head and threatened to shoot up a national guard baser.

The shooter is still on the run. They found his car near a boat dock and authorities don't know if he might have jumped in a boat, ran into the forest, is holed up in a house or is even in the state anymore.

Definitely not your average mass shooter because he is trained in both firearms and survival

Law enforcement anticipates a shoot out when they do find him..

We need to remember, after all mass shootings, there will be a lot of hand wringing and moaning, but after the victims are buried, and the wounded are in physical rehabilitation, nothing is going to change.

The 2nd amendment guarantees easy access to firearms. We expect our citizens, adults and children, to live with the expectation of being attacked in a public place by a well armed individual. To this small contribution to freedom, we must add those who are actually killed by a well armed individual. The fear, the anxiety, the lingering injuries, and the deaths, are of no consequence. It's a price we are willing to pay, over and over again.

This is our choice and it's not going to change.

Unprofessional work of psychiatrists, they had to notify the police, and the police, in turn, stop the right to own weapons and expel it. Does it really take so much intelligence to come to before that. And if really no one will be punished. And if so, then you are guaranteed to have similar cases in the future.s

He is just babbling nonsense and proving his ignorance again. Its not just the AR 15 that is an assault weapon. There are also AK 47's and many more makes and models. And what makes them an assault weapon is the only difference between them and the assault weapons our armed forces carry into battle is th ey are not capable of sh0oting fully automatic without an accessory. But what most people ignore is our troops usually fire in semi automatic mode so they don['t waste ammunition.

Everything else about them including the caliber is the same. They are specifically designed to kill and wound just as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

And I can assure you I know far more about guns than he does and never even implied AR stands for assault rifle. He just invented that.

This is also a very common thing about mass shootings. The family knows the shooter is having mental health issues. But they don't do a fucking thing to make sure they can't get their hands on guns. And this sister in law seems a little more delusional than most. Like texting him. The shooter either doesn't have his phone with him or has pulled the battery out of it. Otherwise law enforcement would have pinged his phone and would know where he is at.

Family Reveals Suspected Gunman’s Link to Maine Massacre Sites

The family of Robert Card—who is suspected of killing 18 people in double mass shootings in Maine on Wednesday night—say the Army reservist had previously claimed he was hearing voices at the two locations he allegedly attacked.

In the aftermath of the carnage, Katie Card, who is married to Card’s brother, told The Daily Beast that their family has been messaging her brother-in-law and urging him to surrender to authorities.
    2
“I have known Rob my whole life,” Card said on Thursday. “He is quiet but the most loving, hardworking, and kind person that I know. But in the past year, he had an acute episode of mental health, and it’s been a struggle.”

She said that Robert Card recently began wearing powerful hearing aids to combat hearing loss. Since then, Card said her brother-in-law has been insisting to his family that he can hear people bashing him—including at Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar and Grill, where he’s accused of gunning down 18 people on Wednesday night.

“He truly believed he was hearing people say things,” she added. “This all just happened within the last few months.”

The bloody rampage began around 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston. Another shooting was then reported around four miles away at the Schemengees Bar & Grille.

Police confirmed on Thursday morning that 18 people were killed and another 13 injured, including kids who were participating in a bowling league.

At a Thursday morning press briefing, officials would not discuss why Robert Card may have targeted the bowling alley and bar.

“That does speak to motive so [it’s] not something we’re going to be prepared to answer today,” Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said.

Katie Card said her brother-in-law would “get mad” when they told him the voices were just in his head. His mental health issues resulted in a weeks-long stay at a facility over the summer, she said.

“Things have kind of gone downhill recently,” Card told the Beast.

“We tried to listen to him and tell him that nobody was talking about him,” she added. “Yesterday, as the story was unfolding, we prayed that Rob had nothing to do with this. But when we heard the two places where the shooting happened, my husband rushed home.”

Katie Card, who is currently with the rest of the family as they wait for news, added that she has been texting her brother-in-law since the shooting, hoping he reads her messages.

Several media outlets have shared a Maine Information and Analysis Center bulletin that describes Robert Card as a trained firearms instructor in the Army Reserve. Service records reviewed by CNN confirm that Robert Card was a petroleum supply specialist in the Army. The records say that he was enlisted in December 2022, had no combat deployments, and received several military awards.

The Maine bulletin also said that, according to authorities, Robert Card “recently reported mental health issues,” which allegedly included “hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, ME.” The Daily Beast has not independently verified the bulletin, which also said he was committed over the summer and then released.

CNN also reported Wednesday that Card recently lost his job at a recycling center. Katie Card told The Daily Beast that her brother-in-law is currently unemployed and that he previously worked at a distribution center and was a long-haul truck driver.

Now, as authorities continue to search for the alleged gunman, his family is begging for the 40-year-old father to turn himself in. The Lewiston Police Department released an image of Card on Wednesday night and said he “should be considered armed and dangerous.” An arrest warrant for him was issued on Thursday on eight counts of murder.

Katie Card insisted that her brother-in-law is probably just “scared.”

“We know he is out there and he is a good person in his heart,” she said. “After all of this, when he has time to reflect, he will be disgusted. We all want him to know that we love him and that we can handle things as a family.”

“He just has to reach out and do the right thing.”

This is the kind of tragedy the American hater and despicables live for.

They love to twirl and spew aboth the dead and injured, wringing their hands and lamenting another mass shooting. And they never miss pointing out that A GUN WAS USED, AND THE NRA AND DEPLORABLES SUPPORT IT AND HAVE BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS.

they know nothing ever changes and they really don't eant any changes.

There is very little we can do to change our gun violent society. We have 400,000,000 guns floating around. Separate states make up their own laws. The federal laws are woefully inadequate and our Constitution establishes the right to bear arms (interpreted as 'own guns). It will be three hundred years before gun violence is reeled in. I'll just try and avoid a bullet before I otherwise die.

‘Incel’ Threatened Massacre at University of Arizona in ‘Day of Retribution,’ Cops Say

A 27-year-old man arrested Tuesday for allegedly threatening a mass shooting at the University of Arizona was an “incel” and fan of infamous misogynist Elliot Rodger, who killed six people in 2014.

That’s according to a federal complaint reviewed by The Daily Beast, which fills in some of the blanks left by UofA police, who announced Michael Pengchung Lee’s arrest on Tuesday night. Lee made the threat on Oct. 22 in a Snapchat group chat, under the screenname “asianluluu,” the complaint states.

“The day of Retribution is upon us, I shall get revenge on all the chads and stacies!!” Lee allegedly wrote in a group chat last Sunday.

He had warned people on Snapchat that there would soon be “a mass tragedy and atrocity at the UofA,” specifying “a mass shooting” when the others asked what he meant, the complaint states.

Lee, who is reportedly not affiliated in any way with UofA, said he was planning on pulling off the murders with an AR-15 assault-style rifle, insisting, “It’s Arizona you can just buy one,” according to the complaint. (Arizona is a so-called permitless-carry state.)

‘Crazy’ NYC Teacher Accused of Slapping, Choking Fifth-Graders

He noted that he’d get the gun “probably right before” the planned shooting, “so my mom doesn’t find it,” the complaint goes on. Lee hadn’t chosen a date yet for the assault, but knew he wanted to go after “Chads” and “Stacies,” incel-speak for attractive, popular young men and women. In this case, the feds believe Lee was after UofA students in fraternities and sororities, the complaint says.

“When he saw the females in the group chat screenshotting his posts he stated ‘fuck you stacies I was gonna give u a warning but now im not,’” the complaint continues. “It’s a solo mission, I’m not normal, I never have been, I’m severely autistic and mentally ill and was never accepted by society, I have no place in the world.”

“Youll hear about it on the news,” he promised.

U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona
Chillingly, Lee allegedly wrote, “also the 10th anniversary of the day of retribution is may 23,2024 btw, but isn't the UofA gonna be out of session by then?”

May 23, 2014, was the date of Elliot Rodger’s killing spree, during which he murdered six fraternity and sorority members near the UC-Santa Barbara campus

and injured 14, leaving behind a manifesto that outlined his rage and hatred for women. Rodger, a 22-year-old virgin, was subsequently made a martyr by other “involuntary celibates,” such as Lee, who the complaint says identifies as a “former incel” in his Instagram page.

“Lee finished his conversation on Snapchat by saying: ‘im gonna do it guys, my mind is made up and there's nothing u can do or say to stop me,’” according to the complaint.

Although the complaint does not spell out the exact chain of events that occurred next, it appears that someone in the Snapchat group took their concerns to campus police, who contacted the FBI. Agents reviewed data from the U of A PD’s automated license plate reader systems and discovered Lee’s vehicle had been in the vicinity of the school’s Greek Row on nine separate days in October, the complaint states.

On Monday, campus police pulled Lee over for speeding, and questioned him about the Snapchat threats. He admitted to everything, telling cops that he was “frustrated with his homelife” and decided to “vent” about it in the group chat, according to the complaint.

“He stated he was a former member of the incel community but was no longer,” it says. “He attempted to purchase a firearm two months ago but decided against it. LEE admitted he was aware the threats to commit a mass shooting were wrong and concerning.”

Lee was booked into the Pima County Jail on a state charge of making a terroristic threat. He is being held on $7,500 bond. The federal charge filed against him, interstate communications containing threats to injure another, carries a maximum sentence of five years.

Lee, whose name was spelled “Pengchong” in a UofA alert sent out Tuesday night, was arrested last month on drug and weapons possession charges after cops found controlled substances and a firearm in a storage facility he rented, according to the complaint.

According to the UofA alert, there is no current or pending threat to students of faculty and no other suspects are being sought. Lee does not have a lawyer listed in federal court records, and was unable to be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Robert Card, the person of interest in the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, on October 25, 2023 liked a number of political posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Heavy reviewed the page shortly before it was suspended by X. It shows that Card followed and/or liked posts by X’s CEO, Elon Musk, and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban as well as a professor who studies terrorism and a number of prominent conservative politicians and pundits, including Donald Trump Jr. and Tucker Carlson. He also liked and shared posts by CNBC, as well as posts on finance.

In March, he liked a tweet by Trump that read, “Given the incredible rise of trans/non-binary mass shooters in the last few years… by far the largest group committing as a percentage of population… maybe, rather than talking about guns we should be talking about lunatics pushing their gender affirming bulls*** on our kids?”

    Card’s X page was at @RobertC20041800.

Card is a U.S. military veteran who had recent mental health issues, according to an internal law enforcement alert. He was still at large as of Thursday morning, October 26, 2023.

Speaking in a press conference, the Maine governor, Janet Mills, said that 18 people had died and 13 more were wounded in the attack. She pledged the community’s support for the victims and their families and said law enforcement is working hard to find Card.

You can read a round-up of the victims here. The first victim named was a grandfather and retired Sears mechanic named Bob Violette, who ran a youth bowling league.

“Law Enforcement is attempting to locate Robert Card 4/4/1983, as a person of interest regarding the mass shooting at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation this evening. CARD should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts,” Lewiston police wrote on Facebook.

Card reposted a CNBC story on X that was headlined, “WNBA star Brittney Griner released from Russian custody after 10 months, Biden says.”

Under it, he wrote on X, “Mass murderer for a wnba player great job keep up the good work.”

He had liked a number of posts of CNBC stories. The only post on his X page was a repost of a tweet from CNBC’s Jim Cramer that read, “All day today you will hear short or under invested bears tell you how last night’s fed actions did nothing or hurt finance and the country. Go read the story of the Odyssey, the part about the sirens. Be Ulysses because they are wrong.”

The law enforcement alert said that Card “is a trained firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve stationed out of Saco, Maine.”

According to law enforcement, the alert says, “Card recently reported mental health issues to include hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, ME. Card was also reported to have been committed to mental health facility for two weeks during summer 2023 and subsequently released.”

Robert Card Followed a MAGA Page, Elon Musk & a Professor Who Studies ‘Muslim Politics’ & ‘Terrorism’

Card followed only a few accounts on X. They included a MAGA page called Proud Patriots, Elon Musk, Mark Cuban, CNBC, Joe Rogan and “@ProfAsifNawaz,” whose page says he is an “Assistant Professor of International Affairs & History @UMaine, Terrorism, International Conflict, Muslim Politics.” The professor’s name is Asif Nawaz.

Nawaz’s biography says: “His research focuses on countering violent extremism and the organizational dynamics of terrorism, such as lethality and longevity of terrorist groups. Dr. Nawaz specializes in the Middle Eastern and South Asian politics and his research utilizes interdisciplinary approaches to study the democratic attitudes and the rise of political Islam and terrorism in the Muslim world.”

According to NBC News, Card “studied engineering at the University of Maine about 20 years ago,” from 2001 to 2004.

Card liked a post by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, that read, “President Biden has already caused record inflation. Now, his reckless refusal to negotiate could lead to a first-ever default. I am prepared to clear my calendar. Mr. President, what are you afraid of?”

He also liked a video by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The caption on the post read, “The trans movement, it turns out, is the mirror image of Christianity, and therefore its natural enemy. People who believe they’re God can’t stand to be reminded that they’re not.”

Card also liked a post by conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza that read, “An assault weapons? Well, cars kill more people than guns do. But we blame the drivers. We don’t ban large or fast cars. We understand that cars, like guns, don’t act by themselves. The blame lies with the people who operate these mechanical devices. Common sense 101.”

He liked a comment Musk made to a post by Joe Biden in which the X owner wrote, “Umm … the banks are melting.” Card liked another reply by Musk that read, “I used to think Bannon was smart & evil, but now I realize I was wrong about the first part.”

He also liked a post by Mohamed A. El-Erian, the president of Queen’s College, who wrote, “#Markets continue to price in #FederalReserve rate cuts, contradicting the Fed’s projections and yesterday’s explicit statements by Chair Powell If anything, the extent of the cuts has deepened post the Chair’s press conference Sets up an interesting reconciliation process ahead.”

Card also liked a post by a conservative page named Catturd that read,

Good morning …When you don’t have the will of The People … you cheat, lie, fudge numbers, force lockdowns, illegally change election laws, run out of ink, make sure the voting machines don’t work in Republican areas only, hire 2000 mules, call voter ID racist, shut down counting on election night, do ballot dumps in the middle of the night which miraculously have 99% Democrat votes, have your propaganda communist media lie for you, count for weeks until you get your candidate to pull ahead then immediately shutdown counting, and arrest your political opponents to win.

To be clear, Card liked the above posts. He did not write them.

He liked a post by a man named Daniel Baranowski, who defines himself as an “ultra MAGA conservative” and who wrote, sharing a picture of Musk: “This man spent $44 billion to buy Twitter so you and I can openly communicate! And the Democrats are LIVID.”

Who, American hater asks, has blood on their hands?
You know, in connection with this latest tragedy.

      Robert Card.
Robert Card would be the one with blood on his hands.
Assuming, you know, he's the shooter in this latest tragedy.

Waits for the American hater to make the case that deplorables are to blame.
